Signs of a faulty or failing geyser

Insufficient Hot Water

  • This is one of the most telling signs of a geyser giving up on you. Normally water heaters hold 150L-200L of hot water.
  • Sediment often builds up inside a geyser as there are minerals that come through the water and the inside of the tank. This can cause build up and make less space inside your geyser, causing your geyser to keep trying to keep the heat and water running longer eventually leading to the geyser failing.
  • Cleaning or flushing the tank at least once a year can help prevent the problem from occurring.

Noises Coming From the Geyser

Be on the looking for banging or clanking noises coming from your geyser. This is also a very common sign. This is because the mineral buildup causes the tank to overheat and the overheating therefore causes the failure.

Murky Hot Water

If the water is not clear or has a funny smell this might be a sign of sediment leaking through the geyser and causing a blockage in the aerators. If there is also a brown tinge to the water this could be copper sediment coming through. If running your water to get rid of the colour does not work then it is time to replace it.

Leaking Geyser

This one is self-explanatory but if your geyser is leaking it is oftentimes a sign of a faulty geyser. A leaking geyser has the potential to flood an entire home, if this happens to you get in touch with our emergency plumbers asap.

How Often should i get my gesyer checked?

If you want to avoid disaster and having to buy a new geyser then you ideally would like to get your geyser repaired and flushed at least once a year.

Pressure Relief Valve

A pressure relief valve is a safety relief valve that releases excess heat, all geysers come standard with this valve. If this valve fails or stops working it has the possibility of overheating to a point where it may explode. This has destroyed many houses and even taken some lives. This is why it is so important for checkups and repairs to your geyser.

Should I fix my own geyser?

Ultimately if you have the know-how and knowledge, go ahead. Otherwise, stay away from fixing or attempting to replace your own geyser, these things are best left up to the professionals. Geysers are large, heavy and difficult to install without a team.

How Long will my Geyser Last?

Geysers generally have a life expectancy of anywhere from 8 to 12 years depending on if you have been keeping up with geyser maintenance and repair. Give us a call if you need a geyser inspection.

Symptoms of a faulty thermostat

Water is not getting hot enough

Probably the most common symptom of a failing thermostat is the water not getting heated enough or not getting heated at all.

Thermostat Knob Not Moving

Sometimes this can cause the thermostat to make the water too hot or too cold. Calling in a geyser repair plumber is usually your best course of action here.

Geyser fixing customers

I called out Plumbers Jhb’s geyser repair team at around 11 pm on a Tuesday which is an inconvenient time for any company. I had a geyser leak in my laundry room and it was beginning to flow into the house and flood my apartment. The team was there within 30 minutes the lady on the phone made sure to get all my details and details of the problem. When the team did arrive they had all the necessary equipment for the job and repaired my geyser for me in less than an hour. I am extremely satisfied with the service received and was able to sleep easy that night knowing my problem had been solved. Thanks to the Plumbers Jhb team for such fantastic service.

I called Plumbers Jhb and the person on the other line was very quick to collect my details and dispatch a team. I had automatically been contacted and shared a live location of my geyser servicing plumber that was on the way. When they arrived the service was quick, they replaced a valve on my geyser and we were up and running in 20 minutes. The geyser was heated and we could rest easy knowing Plumbers Jhb had helped us.
